‘Barrels’ still abound

The tuna fishing continues to fire around a fair slab of the states waters – with fish caught as close as Phillip Island offshore through to Portland. While the fish can be spread out, the hot regions at the moment are from Apollo Bay through to Portland.

James from Unreel Fishing Charters has had a ripper season on the tuna round the state, and his sons Tristan and Dylan have also been on fire on the bluefin. Port Mac has been fishing well for them on a mixture of techniques including live baits and lures. The main standouts have been skirts in the 10 – 12inch size with a variety of heads and running shapes. Halco Laser Pros and Samaki Pacemakers have also been very solid performers on the hardbody scene.

Customer Jamie landed a ripper bluefin locally just recently, with reports only a few days ago that there were still fish in the area. Jamie came in and had some lures re-rigged and they turned out to be the successful offerings. Cut down redbait and high UV patterns on both short cup and angle faces both got bites with fish to 115kg landed.

Customers Mark, Con and sons Coops and CJ fished down along the west coast recently in search of the barrels and did well. Over the 2 days the boys landed 2 nice fish between the 90 – 100kg mark. Trolling larger skirts in the 12 inch size and fishing live baits were the successful techniques.
