Local tuna picking up

The local tuna action has picked up over the past few days, with plenty of fish getting caught from Wilson’s Prom all the way back to Torquay. The calibre of fish has also been quite good, with plenty of fish up to 30kg getting around – with 20kg fish common. A whole mixture of lures has been working on the fish as well which is excellent – from surface popping through to bibbed hardbodies and skirts.

Customer Steve caught some nice tuna to around the 20kg mark aboard Think Big Fishing Charters with skipper Shaun. The fish were caught out from the eastern entrance of Westernport. The most successful lure in the spread was the Halco Laser Pro in the king brown colour scheme.

Kosta from Hooked Up magazine has been chasing the tuna out from Port Phillip heads using a variety of lures. With finicky fish boiling and surfacing near the boat and not really interested in trolled lures, small poppers got the bites. The smallest offerings in the mix were 70mm long and worked when the fish weren’t interested in eating anything.

Customers Damien, Christian and Benny fished out from the eastern entrance of Westernport during the week, and they did well on the school tuna. With a whole mix of lures in their spread, the best performers were Halco Laser Pros with pelagic pirate daisy chains run off the front.
